Facility Type:
The County Landfill is located on SW Dishong Avenue near the town of Nocatee, in central Desoto County. The total landfill area is approximately twenty acres and consists of four lined cells. On site are a waste tire facility, yard trash area, white goods and scrap metal area, three recycling trailers, and the County'shousehold hazardous waste facility.
Patrons of the landfill are requested to place their solid waste in the proper areas, as follows:
Metal/White Goods:
Place your scrap metal, appliances (white goods) and lawn mowers in this area. All units which contain freon (refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners) should be placed in an upright position. Lawn mowers should be empty of any fuels, oils or liquids. The mowers should be placed in the designated space within this area.
Waste Tire Pile:
Place all tires in this area, regardless of size.
Yard Trash:
All tree trimmings, mulch, logs, lawn clippings, and leaves should be placed here. Please remove all materials from plastic bags. Plastic bags should then be disposed of at the Solid Waste disposal area.
Houshold Hazardous Waste:
Waste oil, paint, and batteries should be placed upright on the pallet inside of the three-sided lean-to next to the metal building behind the scalehouse. Please limit oil to five gallons per household per visit. All containers should be closed to avoid spillage. This facility is for household hazardous waste only. Small businesses (small quantity generators) should contact the Desoto County Public Safety Department at 993-4842 for disposal locations. For information on other household hazardous waste please call the Desoto County Environmental Services at 993-4826 during regular business hours.
Solid Waste Disposal (working face):
All solid waste (garbage) should be placed at this location. The spotter (a county employee) will direct you to the proper location and advise you if your load cannot be dropped in this area. Please remember that all materials are to be placed at the designated areas. Failure to do so will result in your being charged with a Mixed Load which will double your cost for that visit.
Recycling:
The Landfill offers three separate trailers dedicated to recycling: one for electronics (computer monitors, televisions, radios, etc.), one for newspapers, and one for plastic, aluminum and glass. Customers are required to unload their own recyclables and place them in the appropriate trailers.
The County passed an ordinance in 1999 ordering that all loads entering the Landfill must be covered or pay an additional $2.00 fee. This ordinance is strictly enforced, so please make sure your load is properly covered.
Visitors to the Landfill from other counties will pay the out of county disposal rate of $84.00 per ton.
